Das Haus von Helmut Rhode ist ein bedeutendes Beispiel der Neuen Sachlichkeit, genauer gesagt des Rationalismus in der Architektur. Es markierte eine Abkehr vom Expressionismus vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg und eine Hinwendung zur formalen Einfachheit. Typisch für diesen Stil wird die Klarheit des Grundrisses von einem großzügigen Wohn- und Essbereich dominiert. Die Südwestfassade zum Garten hin ist voll verglast und steht in starkem Kontrast zur typischen Backstein-Straßenfassade, die vom konservativen Bürgertum bevorzugt wird (C. Hackelsberger, 1985).
Das Dach wurde um vier Ziegelschichten erhöht, und der gewonnene Raum im Dachgeschoss ermöglichte die Aufteilung des Hauses in zwei separate Wohnbereiche, mit individuellen Zimmern, die über eine geschlossene zentrale Treppe zugänglich sind. Transformation of a single-family home into a house with two residential units
Helmut Rhode's house is a significant example of the Neue Sachlichkeit, more specifically the Rationalist movement in architecture. It marked a departure from Expressionism before World War I, embracing formal simplicity. As characteristic of this style, the clear layout of the floor plan is dominated by a spacious living and dining area. The corresponding southwest façade facing the garden is fully glazed, in stark contrast to the brick street façade favored by the conservative middle class of the 50’s and 60’s (C. Hackelsberger, 1985).
The roof was raised by four layers of bricks. The newly gained space in the attic provided ample space for the division of the house into two separate residential units and extra individual rooms / home offices accessed via a closed central staircase. In keeping with the Rationalist principles, the newly created spaces are transparent, and the interior is furnished with minimalistic restraint.
